Snowman & Dance（雪だるまとダンス）

Snowman & Dance is the second piece in the first edition of Osusowake Club!
The illustration started as a pencil sketch, then was redrawn and colored in Procreate. After several rounds of tweaks and recoloring, it was finally printed with the Risograph machine SF3150 using Light Teal, Federal Blue, Yellow, and Tomato Red inks.

この作品は、鉛筆でアイデアスケッチをして、それをプロクリエイトで描き起こし、何度か描き直しや色の塗り直しを経て、最終的にリソグラフ印刷機SF3150でライトティール、フェデラルブルー、黄色、トマトレッドの４色で印刷しました。

For this piece, I wanted to capture a lighthearted winter scene—not the typical bold “Christmas” palette. I imagined how the cold of winter could feel warmer when you're dancing with joy. I grew up in a seaside town in Shizuoka, Japan, where it barely snows—maybe once every three years! Meanwhile, just nearby, Mt. Fuji would be covered in snow. That contrast gave me a lifelong sense of wonder about snow. I’ve lived in snowy Chicago for three years now, but I still haven’t lost that excitement when I see snowflakes fall. One day, I want to build a snowman taller than I am and dance with it!

今回は、いかにもなクリスマスカラーではなく、ちょっと軽やかで心も体も温まるような冬のイラストが描きたくてこの作品を作りました。私が育ったのは静岡県の海辺の温暖な町で、近くに雪化粧をした富士山があるのに、住んでいた地域には数年に一度しか雪が降らない。そんな経験から、今でも雪に対する憧れがあります。シカゴに住んで３年、まだまだ雪にワクワクしています！いつか、自分の背の高さくらいの雪だるまと一緒に踊ってみたいな。

While sketching, I also came up with a 4-panel comic titled "Can’t Help But Dance." A girl builds a snowman as the snow begins to fall. Suddenly, the snowman comes to life—and both are so thrilled, they just start dancing. That kind of pure, silly moment where your heart and body move in sync—that’s what I wanted to capture.

スケッチの過程で、「誰もが踊らずにはいられない」という４コマ漫画も思いついて作ってみました。雪が降り始めて、女の子が雪だるまを作り、できあがった雪だるまが動き出す！そして、二人とも嬉しくて踊っちゃう。そんな心と体が自然と動いちゃう瞬間を描きたかったんです。

I tested several color versions but eventually settled on a white background. Printing 100% ink coverage can increase the risk of smudging or uneven printing, so a lighter touch felt right.

色塗りもいくつか試してみましたが、最終的には白背景に落ち着きました。というのも、紙全体を100％のインクで覆ってしまうと、汚れや印刷のムラが出るリスクが高くなるから。

Although I was a bit cautious with some of the ink opacity settings, the final print came out beautifully balanced and clean.

インクの濃度は少し控えめにしてしまいましたが、全体的に綺麗に色が乗って、満足のいく仕上がりになったと思います。
