My Favorite Fireworks Festival in Japan

Out of Japan’s thousands of fireworks shows, there’s one I love the most—and it happens not just in summer, but all year round!

My Favorite Fireworks Festival in Japan
Wouldn’t it be fun if one day a firework shaped like my face lit up the sky?

Today I want to share one of my favorite fireworks festivals—definitely check it out if you ever visit Japan!

Apparently there are around 4,000–5,000 fireworks festivals across Japan, but my absolute favorite is the Atami Sea Fireworks Festival. My hometown is close to this famous hot spring tourist spot, but it’s the fireworks here that I really love. I looked it up again, and within just 20 minutes, they launch about 5,000 fireworks all at once!

Compared to other festivals, the time is very short, but the sheer volume and intensity of fireworks bursting into the night sky in such a rush is something truly special. The pyrotechnicians synchronize the show with music—it feels like a fireworks orchestra! (They probably use automation too, but still, the timing is incredible.)

What’s really cool about this festival is that it happens not just in summer, but also in spring, fall, and winter! Shizuoka Prefecture stays relatively mild year-round, so even in winter (although it’s chilly), you can enjoy the fireworks. If you get the chance, I really recommend going!
