Halloween Card Progress: Hot Dog & Ant Designs

One card is locked in—hello, hot dog dog! The ant idea? Still wrestling with it… but at least I’m moving forward!

Halloween Card Progress: Hot Dog & Ant Designs
The dog’s face and the pumpkin’s face both turned out great—now all that’s left is coloring!

Still working on my Halloween card assignment for My Imaginary Art School today! The goal was to choose two ideas from yesterday’s sketches and polish them up. First up—the hot dog dog. My husband, who’s exhibiting at the CPG Publishers Fair, gave it the official thumbs up, so I went ahead and finished the line art in Procreate. I’ll work on the coloring over the next few days!

This one’s been a headache in so many ways… but I really love the concept, so I’m determined to finish it!

The second idea I picked was the ant one. When I showed it to my husband, he didn’t get the original phrase, so I decided to keep it simple and just go with “Happy Halloween.” I started redrawing everything to improve the expressions and poses, but then I remembered something I learned yesterday—tiny illustrations and delicate linework don’t really work well for risograph printing. So I tried drawing it by hand again, but I started to lose confidence and finally gave in and went back to Procreate.

And wow… that ant design took forever. I couldn’t stop second-guessing everything—like, what kind of costume would print clearly at such a small size? What poses should the ants be in? What kind of expressions work best? I tried to push through and do what I could, but I wasn’t at my best today.

Tomorrow’s going to be composition experiment day for the ant card! I’m hoping to polish it up into something super cute and eye-catching for the CPG Publishers Fair. Fingers crossed!
