Kicking Off January Projects!

Starting January with two horse-themed projects: a “horse omikuji” and a submission for RISO POP’s Fire Horse illustration competition!

Kicking Off January Projects!
I want it to look like a horse—but with that signature Charlie Yellow twist! So I’m experimenting.

This week marks the official start of my January projects!

I’ve got two main things I want to work on: first, creating a Horse Omikuji (a New Year fortune-themed art piece), and second, finishing and submitting a Fire Horse-themed illustration for an art competition hosted by RISO POP in Amsterdam.

Both projects revolve around horses, so today I spent time sketching some horses. I’ve actually been collecting reference images on Pinterest since last week, and today I looked through those as well as real horse photos while doodling. Still struggling to get them right—I’m as clumsy as ever!

But once I got into the groove, I ended up drawing not just horses, but also donkeys, zebras, unicorns, and pegasi—all the creatures I’m planning to feature in the Horse Omikuji. It was a good learning moment, too: even though horses, donkeys, and zebras look similar at a glance, I noticed little differences in things like mane direction and facial shape. Small discoveries like that make sketching even more fun!
