Mrs. Corn Is Getting Ready for Summer
Chicago’s still chilly, but I’m dreaming of sweet summer corn! Until then, I imagined what the corn might be doing backstage.

Happy Memorial Day!
It’s already the end of May, but Chicago still feels kind of chilly! Last weekend, I felt full-on summer vibes in Asheville, North Carolina, and I’ve heard it’s already getting hot in Japan too. But here in Chicago, I’m still not ready to let go of my winter jacket. I think summer is just around the corner though—probably?
There are so many things I love about summer in Chicago, but as a food lover, Illinois corn is definitely one of my favorites! The corn you can buy at the farmers’ markets here—from local farms—is on a whole other level. The size of the kernels, the sweetness, the juiciness... I was so amazed the first time I tasted freshly picked corn. It made me realize, “Wait, corn can be this good?!”
I started imagining that all the corn is backstage right now, getting ready for their big moment in the spotlight. That idea made me smile, so I ended up drawing Mrs. Corn in her dressing room. This time, I also included a time-lapse video from Procreate! You can see how she came to life—little by little, strand by strand. Hope you enjoy this little peek into her pre-show glam routine!
Great news! The SOAR Farmers Market at the Museum of Contemporary Art is opening again on June 3rd! I’ve been getting my corn from Smits Farm there since last year, and let me tell you—their corn is so good, it’ll make your cheeks fall off. I’m counting down the days already!
